Encountering America through Minor League Baseball.

America is often described as a melting pot of blended ingredients or a salad bowl of mixed, distinct pieces.  Recognizing these metaphors, this liberally illustrated presentation explores America’s unifying themes (like patriotic respect and community pride) and diverse features (like environmental peculiarities and dietary differences) through the lens of minor league baseball, whose teams are located throughout the nation.

Meet the speaker: Joseph L. Price
Joe Price Beverly Hills December Speaker

Joe Price is Emeritus Professor of Religious Studies at Whittier College, where he taught for 36 years. Among his most popular courses were “Sport, Play, and Ritual” and “Muscular Faith,” and he led Whittier College students on travel courses to study baseball and religion in Puerto Rico and Cuba. He is also the Co-Founder and Director of the Institute for Baseball Studies, a collaborative venture between Whittier College and the Baseball Reliquary, for which he serves as Executive Director. Combining his loves of Sports and Religion, his published works include Rounding the Bases: Baseball and Religion in America and From Season to Season: Sports as American Religion. His most recent work, Perfect Pitch: The National Anthem for the National Pastime, blends baseball lore, travel narrative, and personal memoir as it explores America through a lens of minor league baseball and as it chronicles Price’s anthem adventure of singing “The Star-Spangled Banner” at more than 100 professional ballparks in 40 states during the 2011 baseball season.
