Meet the speaker: Yang Shen

Yang Shen, Ph.D. is the Senior Director of Software at Horizon Surgical Systems (Malibu, CA), a startup that develops robotic systems for eye surgeries. He leads Horizon’s software architecture design and oversees its software development life cycle (SDLC) in compliance with FDA regulations. Before Horizon, Dr. Shen delivered software to multiple healthcare robotics companies, including Futronics Corporation (Pasadena, CA), UBTECH North America R&D Center (Pasadena, CA), and SRI International (Menlo Park, CA).

Dr. Shen is the inventor of 15 patents, the lead organizer of 5 international robotics workshops, and one of the few contributors to the CRA’s whitepaper “Mid-cycle Update to the US National Robotics Roadmap” (Washington, D.C., 04/2023). As the author of 4 book chapters and 14 journal/conference papers in robotics and automation, Dr. Shen was invited as an expert reviewer to deliver over 400 reviews for 75 journals and conferences. He is a current member of the editorial board for Frontiers in Robotics and AI, and reviewer board for the journal Robotics. As an active IEEE member, Dr. Shen is with multiple IEEE RAS Technical Committees and is the upcoming Finance Chair of IEEE RO-MAN 2024. He will be a panelist for the National Science Foundation's SBIR/STTR (Small Business Innovation Research, Small Business Technology Transfer) program in 02/2024.

Dr. Shen holds a Ph.D. in Robotics from UCLA and B.Sc. and B.Eng. with the highest honors from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Hong Kong. He has multiple professional certificates in software architecture from Carnegie Mellon University Software Engineering Institute.
