Lawyering in Movie Production:  Lessons in Crisis Management

While movies are being filmed, producers run into a series of unexpected problems which need to be resolved promptly, because time is money. Some of these involve laws or contractual relationships which impact on the work, and an emergency call is made to their production lawyer who then must counsel the client on how to navigate the situation. The lawyer must make very fast decisions, often with no time to check cases which could bear on the matter or even discuss it with colleagues. Marshall Silverman provides us a glimpse of what happens behind the scenes by telling stories from his years of experience working as a production lawyer on numerous feature films about what it was like for him to have to handle such frantic calls from producer clients and solve problems that could have derailed their productions.

Meet The Speaker:

Marshall Silverman has worked as a production attorney, business affairs executive, and production executive at several motion picture companies in New York, California, and London, including 23 years at Warner Bros. where he served as Vice-President & Senior Motion Picture Production Counsel. Marshall has been associated with the development and production of over 40 feature films and is currently Co-CEO of Worldwide Entertainment Studios Inc. He has lectured at Harvard Law School, Southwestern Law School, NYU Film School, and other schools; and is currently an adjunct Professor of Entertainment Law at Brooklyn Law School. Recently, Marshall authored the Montana tax statute known as the MEDIA Act, to encourage production of motion pictures, television series and other media projects in that State, which has enabled the hit television series YELLOWSTONE and its prequel series "1923" to film there.
